KIDS

DSCF3527

I thought this would be an easy blog to write… Gushing praise… but that’s a bit pat. I love all my children as any parent does, but I also like the people they have become. That’s not to say it is all easy! Let’s face it I’m not easy. I’m prone to be hyper or morose in equal measure… well 20%  hyper  80%  morose, the truth be told.  I have always tried to put them first. Although, this has not always been possible, when I left the family home seven years ago, I felt terribly guilty about letting my youngest son down, as he was only 14 at the time… I’d agreed with Marie, my beloved, that I would wait until he was 18 before I moved out… But once she moved up to Crewe to be there for me… I couldn’t wait. I felt choked being apart from her, I was so full of ticks, facial and vocal, if I had not moved out, I would have become a basket case.

AMY

Amy was born in 1985, I’d been married for three years. She took an interminable amount of time to show up. Her mother was in labour about 27 hours… Poor her you might think, but to be honest she slept through most of it, after having an epidural. I had to sit for hours, listening to the beep of the baby monitor they had attached to make sure the baby didn’t get too distressed… Nevermind the poor father! I watched the pulse rate go up and down, alarms would go off, and no staff showed the remotest interest… I kept calling the nurses in, and they would shew me away whilst they examined the mother and child. At 5.30 A.M. Amy appeared, 5 lbs 13 oz, she was tiny, she was beautiful, she was perfect. Any is now 32, pregnant and about the bravest person I know. I went off travelling on my own to Jersey, another story for another time, but I was a street-wise 20-year-old boy. She travelled to America, Canada and Thailand, Laos and Cambodia all on her own. She is 4’11” a dot of a girl, but she has no fear! In Laos, I think, she came down with  Dengue Fever…

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. Symptoms typically begin three to fourteen days after infection. This may include a high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash.Recovery generally takes two to seven days. In a small proportion of cases, the disease develops into the life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever, resulting in bleeding, low levels of blood platelets and blood plasma leakage, or into dengue shock syndrome, where dangerously low blood pressure occurs.

I received a phone call at some ludicrous time of day, usually 3a.m.,

” Dad, I keep passing out, I’ve got a terrible head-ache, Somebody had to lift me up out of the toilet and put me back to bed… what shall I do?”

“Can you pretend not to be sick?”

“Why?”

” Because if you are that sick, you need medical attention, so either you go to hospital in a third world country, with no medical insurance or anything… Or you book a flight home as soon as possible, and I will pick you up from the airport and take you home and you can get treated there.”

This is how brave my daughter is, she caught a plane to China, then to India, and flew home to Gatwick, whilst all the time suffering from a severe case of Dengue Fever… Amazing feat. She still suffers from the side effects of Dengue Fever to this day, much the same way as my Granddad used to have Malarial flares-ups.

With her brother Nathan, she also walked from Lands End to John O’Groats in support of leukaemia, which unfortunately took our Uncle Melvyn in the same year. She had numerous problems, swollen ankles, rashes… but she never gave up and I had the pleasure of meeting the two at John O’Groats.10574478_10152745064214841_1221244427841321746_n

NATHAN

Nath is the funniest person I know, his sense of humour is second only to his comic timing… It’s funny how your kids all have different aspects of your personality, you would think that bringing them up in the same way, they would all be similar in personality. But they are not, all three are different. Nath was the only birth I missed. I got a phone call from the hospital saying my wife had been induced and by the time I got there, Nath was already there. I think he was the biggest baby of the three, about 8 lbs 8 oz… I know I should know, but to be honest it was 28 years ago, and it hasn’t come up that often. He is a character. To say the least. A friend of his once referred to him as Jesus. Well he said. “Gotta look after the Jesus fella.” Not sure what he meant, but I kind of knew… Nathan is capable of anything. Good, Bad or bloody awful. You get to the stage that nothing shocks you. He would wear his school Blazer inside out, just to say Fuck You! He was wearing the blazer so not breaking any rules… He took one of his O’levels wearing a skirt. He would go out to parties and I’d get a phone call… Nath’s on the roof again.

Nath Used the police as a taxi firm… I’d get knocked up by two burly policemen… Is This your son?

Yes.

We just picked him up at the end of the street.

This Street?

Yes.

So You picked him up 50 yards from his front door?

Yes, but we weren’t to know that… He was acting very drunk!

But not too drunk to find his way home…

We just wanted to make sure he got home safely.

Well thank you Officer… Thank you for your help.

Lots of other incidents… not going to go further. He is very shy. He can’t bear to be tongue-tied, so he drinks  and then he can’t stop talking.

He is the second most intelligent person I know, Marie is the most, and yet… I hope he works out a way to live serenely. I truly do.

JAMES

James was born as a way to save a marriage. A tall order. It didn’t work.  I feel I let him down, I left when he still needed me around. He had got the short straw out of the three, because for the most part of his life, I was working away all week and just being a week-end Dad. It was hard on him, but I did give him my weekends almost exclusively, I went to Crewe Alex with him on Saturdays and Sundays I was ever-present for his Football team, even coaching them on occasion. I am the worst football dad, (and rugby, when coaching Nath’s rugby team… I walked on the pitch and threatened one of the opposition when he clothes-lined one of my players off the ball…) I would shout at referees, totally reprehensible. I know… Sport brings out my monster… At school the Deputy Head made me wear a mouth guard just to stop me shouting abuse at the ref… He even made me Captain just because I would at least be allowed to question the Ref without getting sent off.

James is no book-worm. He was unlike the other two who always shared my love of books. James showed no interest in books or reading, until he found football at the age of Four. He was mad about  Micheal Owen, and basically taught himself to read with Shoot and other football magazines. He’s very clever, but in ways which are different to me and the other two. He is doing a Business Studies degree at Chester… A subject which just makes me glaze over.Picture 040

My children are the thing that I am most proud of… The only thing I think I did right. They would all probably claim different. But they would all do anything for me as I would for them. My Dad once said to me,

“The trouble with you is you want your kids to be your friends…”

No Dad, I want them to be my best friends, the same as my brother is…

Thanks for reading…

This is not a definitive list, I went upstairs to my library and went through my books, looking for must reads… Obviously, I’ve only picked one book from each author, because if you enjoy one you will go and check out the rest for yourself. I’m sure I’ve missed out lots of my favourite books, but since moving house the books were just put on the shelves without any codification, so what you find is a bit of a lottery. What I do know is that all of the books listed are well worth reading. I’ve not included my Art books, because they are not really about the writing but more about the artists.

DESERT ISLAND DISCS

cropped-img_1397.jpg

I’ve waited and waited for Kirsty Young to give me a call… but No call cometh … So I’m going to have to do my own bloody show!

So Dale, I believe from an early age you have been interested in music?

Yes Paddy, that’s right, I would spend hours playing the few L.P’s my Parents owned. My favourite group was The Beatles prior to my teenage years… I loved to sing along to all those mono playing early Beatles albums, but to pick one track it would have to be:

Simply because I like the lyrical structure, and because John sings in my key… I used to sing sweetly to my girlfriends of that age… imagine that? How cringe-making… I had no Shame! No change there…

My 2nd choice has to be Seasons in the Sun by Terry Jacks. This came out in the summer of 1974, just months after my brother Jerry died. I cried all bloody summer, but it is the song that makes me think of him.

What to say about my brother Jerry… he was 4 years younger, so I had to always give him a lead to get him to play football, rugby (banned from the house after i dived through the glass window in the lounge. Four stitches. Another scar, he pushed me on to the corner of a tin box broken on the corner, two-inch gash on my bum, the scar remains… He does not. We fought all the time, but I was fiercely protective and wouldn’t let anyone else say a bad word against him.

My third choice has to be Five Years by David Bowie. Not my favourite Bowie song, which is sweet thing trilogy off Diamond Dogs, but it has the lines :

‘I think I saw you in an ice-cream parlour, drinking milk shakes cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine, don’t think
You knew you were in this song’

And every time I heard those lyrics I thought of Marie… Every time I heard it for thirty-three years!

One love to last a life-time, one David Bowie, looking Gorgeous as ever!

My fourth song has to be Talking Heads, ‘Once In A Lifetime’. When my two eldest kids, Amy and Nathan were little, we used to have a mad sunday morning, before their Mum got up, dancing around the room like idiots to the Stop Making Sense video… Amy said that this song just reminds her of her childhood,

I used to take them in my arms like latter day refugees from Strictly come dancing, and waltz up and down the lounge… Then we’d do the running on the spot… Crazy fun. natural fun as the tom tom club would say.

Number 5 with a bullet (today) has to be Cocteau twins ‘Lorelei’. John Peel once said that the first time he heard pearly dew drops drops, he had to pull over to the side of the road because it made him weep so much! Well this tune does that for me!

This song epitomizes a period of my life which was quite difficult emotionally, I had a baby daughter and a marriage which wasn’t really working for either of us, though we both tried to make it work! Sometimes things are not meant to be, and after 30 years, you can’t say we didn’t give it a go!

Ok, enough of that, tune number 6 comes from a band that I only really found when I moved in with my lovely lady… Of course it makes me cry, every bloody Elbow song makes me cry, Also I went to see them a couple of years ago with all three of my kids…

Its beautiful and it reminds me of my no.1 hero John Lennon, And listening to it would remind me of the gig with my kids… passing on the baton so to speak!

Only two left? Jesus it’s impossible. All my choices seem so mainstream, not at all like me, but I suppose in the end, it’s not about the music but more about memories so please remember that when you come to judge me!

next has to be Birds of Paradise by The pretenders.

You have to love Chrissie Hynde, probably the nicest person around… according to Morrisey. This is such a beautiful melancholic nostalgia it makes your bones ache to remember… Soul supper…. Eat to the beat! (Marie is the spit of Chrissie… in my opinion not hers, she turns her nose up at the comparison!)

Oh my God, just one song left! I’ve picked this just because it is the perfect pop song, sung with such amazing vocals… Levi Stubbs is the best soul singer in my judgement.

It’s the first song I remember having a video on top of the pops, it was of the tops in a greyhound bus… This might be a false memory, I was six at the time!

Anyway that’s the choices I’ve made, not what I would have imagined making… Tomorrow it might be completely different, can’t believe there is no siouxsie or penetration… No John Lennon as a solo artist.

The Book? I’d have to take a book given to me by my friend Steve Dailly, called

The Black Goddess and the Sixth Sense Hardcover – 22 Oct 1987
by Peter Redgrove (Author)
Which explores the mythology of Kali and other versions of the Black Goddess.
Luxury item: as you can’t take dogs or lovers, it would have to be a plantation of tobacco and a few cannabis plants for medicinal purposes.

The over-arching theme of my desert island disco playlist is songs that make you want to get up and dance… You know the feeling, you’re sitting in a dark corner of a dance hall and the opening bars play… You feel the hairs on the back of your neck rise and your feet just take you out to the dance floor, the imperative to dance is all consuming. This playlist runs the gamut of eras from 1970 right up to 2016, Which pretty much covers my dancing years… Though to be fair my dancing, these days, consists of Dad dancing or swinging my pants in a Trev and Simon stylee.

There are a few tracks which may be considered cheesy, like Boney M, but I’ve included them because the 12″ inch version really was the first song I remember that had a messy breakdown and along with Get on Up by James Brown, would turn the disco floor into a writhing mass of humanity…

It is this sense of songs breaking into just a swirl of trance-like mesmeric beats which has always excited me and I hope that you will enjoy my choices.

POST SCRIPT

Had an absolute blast on the show  thanks to all the listeners who were so complimentary, I particularly liked the one who said I should be available on the NHS… I am and at very little cost.

i’ve also had a proposal of marriage which I had to decline but thank you all… and a special thank you to Lauren and Ash and all the team for being so blooming nice…

You made an old man very happy… another bucket list completed.

Dale.

REFLECTION

invert upside

Anybody who has followed my blog will have realised that I have had a moment of madness. I deleted all of my blogs as an un-requested  grand gesture. This was a long arduous task to completely remove them… But I almost managed it. The reasons for this aberration are private and personal, suffice to say that I had hurt the person who means everything to me.  I thought that this grand gesture would prove my undying love. Apparently, I did not have to prove that, I just had to understand how my familiarity with other writers could be inappropriate. I realise that this caused a great deal of hurt and this was something I never wanted to do. So, after a few days, I felt that some of my poetry and prose was worth keeping. Together, we have managed to patch most of my blogs back together. By using google cache and my twitter tweets, I have reclaimed all the blogs now available on my site. Most have been placed in the archives. The tracks of my years series are new, I’d been planning it since my birthday last week.

I have been a little reticent to create new blogs apart from this, because I’m not sure how I want to continue it forward. I mean, I enjoyed making playlists for each blogs, but it is quite labour intensive. I know that some of my readers enjoy the playlists, but others find it an annoyance. Similarly, as much as I enjoy reading other blogs, with the amount I followed it was taking me more time to read and like their blogs than it was to write my own. So I have cleaved back the amount of follows I give out. This is not because I’m selfish, just because I have so little spare time. I need to create.

I need more time. I’m starting to paint again, write again, I’m even considering doing a sculpture. I hate to be ungracious, but time, at my age, comes at a premium. I have to try to do as much as I can. I want my Grand-daughter to be able to come to this archive and find out who her granddad was… Maudlin, but with my health as it is, I have no guarantee that I will be around that long.

So if I’m not as attentive as I have been, I apologise. If you wish to stop reading my blogs thats quite alright, I realise that your time is valuable too.

Thank you all for making feel at home in this community.

Live in Love

Dale.

SOUL

IMG_0186

These two Ellie and Freya, make my soul sing with joy, my grenades of joy! They have filled my old body with their youthful exuberance. I have spent only one night apart from them since we first got them on the same day back on 27th August 2016. I have them sleeping on a mattress beside our bed. I have a sympatico with them, they know me better than any human, as I am like a God to them. They think I am made of chocolate. It is the nature of dogs to impart all their love and trust in their pack leader, which is in this case me. I wear the crown lightly, I am not a demigod, I imbue love to each of them as is their want. Ellie likes food, no not likes, obsesses about food, she is part labrador and it is genetically encoded. Freya is obsessed with T.V. and stares at me until I give in and put it on for her. Not just any t.v. program will do, it has to be about animals… If its something I want to watch, which to be fair is rarely, she will whine until I change the channel. That is why they are pictured in a blog about soul. They are my soul’s ease.

What I wanted to write about was the way this blog has gladdened my soul, I have followers and follow people all over the world. So many nice, friendly, and talented people from so many different backgrounds, this is a revelation to me. when i started my blog, it was about reaching out to my friends, my family, and people who might want to know me better. It was about breaking my block, writers block, and I thought that may be a few people might be interested in what I had to say. To my surprise and delight, I have had readers from all over the globe… 61 different nationalities… Totally mind-blowing… Now I have been published as a poet, written articles in newspapers and magazines, performed as an actor on the professional stage, had my paintings up on many walls; but in all that time and artistic endeavours, I’ve reached no more than a few thousand people in a locality of a few hundred miles at most… Here… in the space of a few months I have reached thousands from all over the globe. 61 countries? From Nepal my friend  Ankit, to palestine territories, to russia, Australia, USA, Canada, Italy, Spain, Latvia… All over the world, so many friends, all striving to write their important thoughts in English as a 2nd language… Some writing so beautifully in English it makes your heartache. And there are others like my friend Nazim, who is making baby steps to reach a level of writing which can reach our language. So many nice, decent people,  who reach out and support one another through their artistic efforts, coming from so diverse frames of reference… Poetry, prose, points of view, art from many different perspectives, be it just an artistic need or a social or psychological need. All have important words to impart, all giving of their soul. I delight in reading their efforst, and I delight in them reading mine, and commenting, words of encouragement. This community shows what we, ordinary people, can do. We can create a better world just by sharing and being open with one another. I know this sounds like a hippy trip, 60’s dude trying to lay peace on the world. But Peace is that easy, it is about sharing and being open to each other.

Thanks to all for reading, thank you all for giving me hope.
